Summary

Overall, the book gives a nice overview of the history of stoicism。 There were several stoics mentioned whom I never heard of before and it was nice reading their stories, some of which were exhilarating。 I also liked learning about ideas the stoics argued among themselves like his to view wealth。The book does have flaws though。 There are many philosophers in the book and they all necessarily get short sections written about them。 This makes it hard to go into much nuance about their lives and u Overall, the book gives a nice overview of the history of stoicism。 There were several stoics mentioned whom I never heard of before and it was nice reading their stories, some of which were exhilarating。 I also liked learning about ideas the stoics argued among themselves like his to view wealth。The book does have flaws though。 There are many philosophers in the book and they all necessarily get short sections written about them。 This makes it hard to go into much nuance about their lives and unfortunately the authors resort to overly simplified and frankly cheesy judgements of the philosophers they write about。 Sometimes it felt like they just hyped up stoics over actions and remarks that weren't particularly special。 This isn't a good place to learn about the tenants if stoicism if that's what you're interested in, but that wasn't the point。 Overall, it does give a good overview of the history of stoicism and its philosophers and by the end, I was really happy to have read the book and genuinely look forward to reading deeper into stoicism than I have so far。 。。。more

More good Stoic stories from Ryan Holiday

I enjoyed this book very much。 I may not be very fair, as I am a huge fan on stoicism。 However, if you are reading this, you have an interest in it - just give it a try, it may surprise you。

My least favourite of Holiday’s books。 A mixture of history and philosophy, but not as well done as his later releases。 Still a good start point for those looking to get into the philosophy of stoicism and the figures involved in it。

A sad sort of cash-in book - I really wish I had known better than to get it thinking I would learn something more than I would from a Wikipedia page。 Also, this has got to be the worst audiobook reading I have ever heard, proof that the author must be obsessed with the sound of his own voice。

I have never taken a philosophy class! How can one graduate from higher learning w/o a basic philosophy course?! That confession said, this book- although superficial-really got me interested in learning more。 So here I go!

Okayest bookDid I learn something new? Yes, I did!Did I enjoy the book? 50-50ishWas it worth the purchase? Not really…I saw this from another book as a recommendation since I already have some interest in stoicism。 So why not! I brought this up with different expectations。 Which backfired on me because this has so many “lives”…I was looking for something with a depth of thinking more than historical mentions… that's what I felt like when I read this book。 Okayest bookDid I learn something new? 。。。more

An informative and enjoyable read。 Most of the chapters are only several pages long, and each focuses on the life of one of the early stoics, and that person's contributions to the stoic philosophy。 And throughout the text, the author weaves concepts from stoicism as it now stands。 An easily understandable book, though the stoic principles it describes are difficult to practice, which the author acknowledges。 Definitely a book worth reading for anyone who wishes to be better, live better。 An informative and enjoyable read。 Most of the chapters are only several pages long, and each focuses on the life of one of the early stoics, and that person's contributions to the stoic philosophy。 And throughout the text, the author weaves concepts from stoicism as it now stands。 An easily understandable book, though the stoic principles it describes are difficult to practice, which the author acknowledges。 Definitely a book worth reading for anyone who wishes to be better, live better。 。。。more

The Stoics, I guess like me and most people have an unquenching thirst for knowledge and self improvement。 They were not perfect, they were the great thinkers of their time but we can also learn from their mistakes。 Most of them are men and I wish there were more women philosophers not just in the past but today as well。 It was also so surprising knowing how these men died or choose to die- like one just chose to stop breathing, one was plagued by nightmares another with excessive laughter。aand The Stoics, I guess like me and most people have an unquenching thirst for knowledge and self improvement。 They were not perfect, they were the great thinkers of their time but we can also learn from their mistakes。 Most of them are men and I wish there were more women philosophers not just in the past but today as well。 It was also so surprising knowing how these men died or choose to die- like one just chose to stop breathing, one was plagued by nightmares another with excessive laughter。aand with that, just gonna casually leave a quote here from Marcus Aurelius: “You have lived your life。 Now take what’s left and live it properly。”Notes on the Lives of Stoics:- Philosophy offers counsel, to illuminate the path in life, to find tranquility, purpose, self-control and happiness。- Zeno: accustom your body to be the servant of your mind。- 3 kinds of life: contemplative, active and rational。- Courage, Justice, Moderation, Wisdom- Aristo: living our lives on how closed we came to virtue in the moments that mattered。- It is not what you write or build but the example you set yourself, the things you lived by。- Caveat Emptor: buyer beware- Learn。 Apply。 Learn。 Apply。 This is the Stoic way。- Daimon: personal genius or calling- That in an unpredictable world, all we can manage is ourselves。- If it is not right, do not do it。 If it is not true, do not say it。 - Cicero: If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need。- At the core of stoicism is the acceptance of what we cannot change。- We need guidance and we need the to live the progress of getting better。- Wisdom (phronesis), Self-Control (sophrosune), Justice (dikaiosune), Bravery (andreia), appropriate acts (kathekonta)- Lucius Annaues Seneca: On the Tranquility of Mind- Epictitus: “It is better to starve to death in a calm and confident state of mind than to live anxiously amidst abundance。”- ta eph’ hemin, ta ouk eph’ hemin - “what is up to us and what is not up to us。”- Our opinions determine the reality we experience。 It is not thingns that upset us but our judgement on them。- Where our heart is set, there our impediments lie。- It is impossible to begin to learn that which one thinks they already know。- Galene: calmness or stillness 。。。more

Each chapter is a mini biography of a famous stoic starting with Zeno and concluding with Marcus Aurelius。 I really enjoyed this"," since I like biographies and I got a bunch of them all at once lol。 Along the way the author reiterates main themes from stoicism and connects it to each persons life and how they impacted the philosophy as well as showed or failed to show it through their actions。 Each chapter is a mini biography of a famous stoic starting with Zeno and concluding with Marcus Aurelius。 I really enjoyed this"," since I like biographies and I got a bunch of them all at once lol。 Along the way the author reiterates main themes from stoicism and connects it to each persons life and how they impacted the philosophy as well as showed or failed to show it through their actions。 。。。more

Audiobook was great。 I have enjoyed Ryan Holiday on Tim Ferris’ podcast and you can tell how engaged in the content he is as he reads it。 This is a book I’ll return to as I dive deeper into my study of stoicism。 It’s particularly helpful to me to understand a philosophy through the study of its practitioners。 Obviously, these people were deeply flawed but that makes them no different than any others。 Indeed, we have much insight to glean even from those flaws。 This is one I’ll want the physical Audiobook was great。 I have enjoyed Ryan Holiday on Tim Ferris’ podcast and you can tell how engaged in the content he is as he reads it。 This is a book I’ll return to as I dive deeper into my study of stoicism。 It’s particularly helpful to me to understand a philosophy through the study of its practitioners。 Obviously, these people were deeply flawed but that makes them no different than any others。 Indeed, we have much insight to glean even from those flaws。 This is one I’ll want the physical copy of so that I can flip open to a chapter and do some meditation。 It’s encyclopedic in that way。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 I am familiar with the writing of Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius but hadn't heard about many of the philosophers discussed in this book, probably because most of their writing hasn't survived to the modern day。 It is interesting that Greek Stoicism was so influential in Roman times and has had an impact on Western thought up to our times。 It is unfortunate that the works of so many of the philosophers discussed in this book no longer survive。 It would probably I really enjoyed this book。 I am familiar with the writing of Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius but hadn't heard about many of the philosophers discussed in this book, probably because most of their writing hasn't survived to the modern day。 It is interesting that Greek Stoicism was so influential in Roman times and has had an impact on Western thought up to our times。 It is unfortunate that the works of so many of the philosophers discussed in this book no longer survive。 It would probably change the way we think about their philosophies。 。。。more
